When The Gardens Trust approached me to consult on a sensitive strand of their Sharing Repton: Historic Landscapes for All project, I didn’t hesitate to say yes. It’s rare to find a brief that so closely aligns with both your skills – and your values.
Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the initiative aimed to connect more culturally diverse audiences with historic gardens – with events that included everything from African drumming to family-friendly storytelling. One strand explored the legacy of mansion houses and their links to slavery – and that’s where I came in.
With my background in inclusive copywriting and culturally sensitive content, I was brought in to review a series of social media posts from both a strategic and editorial angle. My role included:
Ensuring the language was respectful, nuanced, and clear, especially for audiences from Black and minority ethnic backgrounds
Identifying what was missing – sometimes a lack of context, sometimes a silence that needed gently breaking
Suggesting ways to strengthen the storytelling – without losing factual accuracy or emotional integrity
I also drew on my own knowledge of Black British history – a subject I write about through The WATS Line – to guide the tone and framing of key messages.
Now here’s the part I loved most. The client didn’t ask me to write the pieces for them – instead, they wanted to walk the journey themselves. My role was to act as a guide, helping ensure sensitivity and inclusivity throughout. It wasn’t just about getting the content “right” – it was about supporting The Gardens Trust and their team in becoming stronger allies and more socially inclusive storytellers.
It was a joy to work with a client so genuinely open to feedback. This wasn’t just about edits – it was about helping them tell these stories with care and confidence. And that’s exactly the kind of work I love doing.
If you’re looking for a copywriter who understands the importance of sensitivity and inclusivity in your content, I can help. Whether you need expert editing, thoughtful sensitivity reading, or guidance on creating culturally aware copy, get in touch. I would love to support your storytelling journey.
